The Town Planning Section was founded in the year 1966. COEP has the distinction of being first in the state to start a master’s program in Town and Country Planning. Since its inception, the section has grown into one of the largest and most widely respected post graduate Town and Country Planning program in the state and country. It was merged with Department of Civil Engineering in the year 2006. In 2012, a four-year bachelor course in Planning has also started after permission from AICTE. These courses are committed to produce best Planners of the Nation to take up the challenges of physical and socio-environmental development of global standards.
Department of Planning was formulated on 21st February 2023 under the School of Civil Engineering and Planning at COEP Technological University.

I welcome you to the Department of Planning on behalf of faculty, staff, and students. The department hosts UG , PG and PhD programs in planning. The Bachelor’s in Planning is the only course in Maharashtra at the UG level for Planning and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra. The post-graduate Planning program started in 1966 is a widely respected Planning program in the state and country. Both the courses are recognised by Institute of Town Planners India (ITPI).
My vision is for the department to be a Center of Excellence in and Urban and Regional Planning , Environment and Sustainable Development . The department strives to maintain highest standards of leadership in urban planning and design in the country by becoming a catalyst for innovation, knowledge creation, dissemination of best practices, training, capacity building, and creating platforms for sustained engagement of academia-industry- government and civil society.
Urbanization is most certainly the single most important thing that is happening in India. In future India has to prepare for this urban explosion with opportunity as economically powerful India. Government of India’s policy, which is a leap forward towards renewed emphasis on planned development, smart cities and decentralized planning would open up the new vistas and broaden the canvas of town and country planning and enhance the job opportunities of town and country planners in the years to come.
The Department is well equipped with committed faculty and staff to support young future planners with emphasis on quality teaching and learning process along with hands-on approach promoted by our Planning studios. The activities in the studio are focused mainly on diverse planning sectors including urban mobility, socio-economic aspect, urban
infrastructure development, public space design among others. The departmental computer lab includes the latest software required in the field, including GIS. The department is constantly working towards all-around skill development through Guest lectures, workshops, conferences, and career services facilitated by national and International experts. The department promotes research in challenge-driven formats that are needed to align research and innovation with real-life problems and opportunities.The Department has produced alumni who have made significant contributions to the private sector and to government organizations like the Town Planning and Valuation Department, Mahametro, Regional Development Authorities, MHADA, MIDC also think tanks like National Institute of Urban affairs among others.
The department will continue contributing to this field by developing students capable of charting out the path of sustainable urban development.
